NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks closed sharply higher on Wall Street as Americans headed to the polls in a closely fought U.S. presidential election.
Companies that investors believe would benefit if Mitt Romney wins had some of the biggest gains. They included United Technologies and Boeing, which do substantial business with the Defense Department.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 133.24 points, or 1 percent, to 13,245.68.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.13 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,428.39.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 12.27 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,011.93.
For the week:
The Dow is up 152.52 points, or 1.2 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 14.19 points, or 1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 29.80 points, or 1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,028.12 points, or 8.4 percent.
The S&P is up 170.796 points, or 13.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 406.78, or 15.6 percent.
