The holiday season is here. Thanksgiving is less than a week away and Christmas is coming soon. It is never too late to start your holiday shopping. Gift-givers will want to check out Judy Hodgin and Joanne Gallagher?s ?Holiday Home Craft and Gift Show? this weekend. The show offers a wide variety of locally made gifts and decorations for the holiday season.
Hodgin hosts the show in her large country home located at 7482 North Hodgin Road, Apple River, Illinois. The show is two days ? Friday, November 16, 3-8 p.m. and Saturday, November 17, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
The holiday show has been a tradition for at least 20 years.
?Judy and I are friends and neighbors,? Gallagher said. ?It seemed a natural fit for us to display our things together. We complement each other well. Judy has the perfect setting in her country farmhouse. It really gets transformed into a country Christmas setting that?s easily accessible for people.?
?My house is handicap accessible and it?s a big old farm house,? added Hodgin. ?We thought we?d give it a try and see who would come in the middle of nowhere. Every year, I get the butterflies that nobody is going to show up and then here they come. We have two or three people that never miss a show. I?m always amazed at how far some people will come.?
The show continues to grow. Every year is different. Hodgin says this year?s show features a lot of Christmas decorations, barn start d?cor, timer candles, outdoor metal art, indoor and outdoor glassware, hand-woven baskets, cement leaves and more. Everything is locally made.
New This Year
The brightly colored cement leaves are new this year. They may be used in the flower garden or indoors in the house. Hodgin says Sherry McAuliffe of Apple River creates them by placing a leaf in a pile sand. She covers the leaf with cement, lets it cure and then paints them. They retain the shape and detail of the original leaf.
?One thing I?m creating this year is a special Christmas tree designed around an old step-ladder,? Gallagher explained. ?There are unique ornaments that are useful things from the past. On each step is a primitive container holding Christmas decorations.?
Door Prizes
?We?ll have plenty of door prizes and lots of refreshments,? Hodgin said. ?We?ll have Mary Shippy?s Christmas cookies, dips and chocolate covered pretzels ? not only for snacking but also for purchase.?
Hodgin?s home is easy to find. It is two miles west of Apple River or eight miles east of Scales Mound on Stagecoach Trail, then south on Hodgin Road. Watch for signs. A snowman sign at the end of the driveway has an arm up greeting you.
Meander up the driveway where you are welcomed by an assortment of snowmen and other metal art created by John Bourquin, ?The Rusty Nut.? Enter Hodgin?s home which is filled with the sights, smells and tastes of a true country Christmas. Enjoy a relaxing time selecting that special gift or decoration.
