Creative reflections on the River Don

Council news??>??Press Releases??>??Creative reflections on the River Don

Aberdeen's Woodside Writers group is preparing for the launch of its first book ? an anthology of poetry and prose inspired by the River Don.

The Don, from Source to Sea, produced in association with SURF Aberdeen, features the work of 20 contributors, including members of the creative writing group and independent writers based along the length of the Don.

The creative writing group will launch the book at a special event at the Woodside Fountain Centre on Saturday [1 December] which runs from 7-9pm. All are welcome to attend.

Woodside Writer Lynne Digby said: "It's been hard but enjoyable work and we're all very proud with our first book. We're especially pleased with the quality of the writing and the breadth of the contributions ? the writers come from all ages and all places along the Don.

"Personally speaking, it's brought me a great deal of joy and confidence to be able to share my love of the Don with others such a creative and public format. I hope that this is just the beginning."

Sinclair Laing, SURF Aberdeen project manager said: "I've had a sneak preview of the book and I'm very impressed by the quality of the writing. The poems and prose are high calibre, and range from funny to inspiring to moving.

"Naturally, SURF Aberdeen is very proud to be involved and able to assist with bringing this project to fruition and gain the writers, and the area, more of the attention they so rightly need and deserve."

Mark Lovie, Woodside Writers community project co-ordinator added: "The writers group has been formed for less than two years, yet the quality of their work is timeless. To have achieved formation of a group and a quality publication in such a short period of time is testament to their creative abilities and their drive."

The Woodside Writers group is supported by Fersands Community Project. Publication of this book was made possible with support from the SURF Aberdeen project.

The SURF (Sustainable Urban Fringes) Aberdeen project aims to bring communities, organisations and ideas together to initiate a renewed focus and collaborative management to the River Don area.

The SURF Project is part of the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme and is jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Aberdeen City Council.

Bluetooth dock dongle Pear falls short of Apple certification, gets shelved

Last summer, Pear promised to make pairing iDevices via Bluetooth to an Apple-compatible speaker dock easy, but caught a trademark snag that put it on hold shortly after. The adapter seemed destined for a release under a different moniker, but it's met an impasse. According to the folks behind the hardware, the device wasn't approved under Apple's MFi (Made for iPad / iPhone / iPod) program since Cook and Co. don't bestow the seal of approval upon products that leverage the 30-pin female connector in conjunction with Bluetooth. Pear's creators note they could move ahead without Apple's blessing, but say that the development "officially kills this product" since Cupertino could put the kibosh on the operation. Despite dashed hopes for the dongle's reincarnation, its creators are pushing forward with another product -- though it's unclear if it's an iteration of the ill-fated connector -- and expect to have more details within three to four weeks.

Top Boarding Schools | How to Help Boost Self-Esteem in Your Teen

There is a plethora of reasons that cause teens to suffer low self-esteem. Factors such as their appearance, conforming to the crowd and even talent are big contributors. Now more than ever, fame is a highly valued trait and it seems that fame can be easily achieved. The assumed simplicity in achieving fame quickly can make a teenager feel like there is something wrong with his or her self if they are not being recognized in this fashion.

Many other factors contribute to low self-esteem as well as the above mentioned. It is important for you to help increase your teen?s self-esteem. There are different ways to do so, so these are tips to help you do it successfully.

Compliment Specific Activities

Many parents compliment teens on vague premises. For example, just telling your teen that he is helpful is vague. The teen will not attach the compliment to an action and the comment will be forgotten. Instead, when your teen carries heavy items inside for you say, ?You are so helpful. Thank you for carrying all of that heavy stuff for me.? To compliment specific activities, be diligent. Watch for actions that are specific and compliment when completed. Complimenting the teen?s character traits will carry more value in the mind of the teen than vague compliments.

Detail Successes

It is okay to tell your teen that he or she did a great job on an essay, or a good job on a math test. To help increase the teen?s self-esteem, describe aspects of the essay or test and tell the teen why they did well. For example, in a research essay, describe an aspect of the essay that you truly believe your teen did well on, ?You used excellent grammar and punctuation, and you really nailed the topic. I understood your point of view.? This will be a lasting compliment.

Give Them Something To Complete

Teenagers frequently complain about chores, however, doing a job around the house and doing it well holds a lot of value. Teenagers derive a great deal of confidence from completing meaningful tasks that help others. Finding community activities for your teen to participate in is an excellent avenue to boost self-esteem. They can even do something kind and simple like taking the elderly neighbor?s dogs for walks.

Be Mindful Of What You Say

Are there things that your parents told you that hurt feelings and you have never forgotten them? No matter how many nice things they said afterwards, you are still haunted by the negative comments. Be mindful so that you do not do the same thing to your teen.

Another important thing to keep in mind is how critical you are and how you verbalize your criticism. If you constantly criticize, your teen will learn to be critical of others, the world, and self. If you slip and make a hurtful statement, ask your teen if it hurt his or her feelings. If it did, apologize to your teen. A sincere apology can help your teen let go of the hurt and learn to cope with hurtful comments in the future.

Twitter fiction festival kicks off today

PARIS (AFP) ? Twenty-nine storytelling projects from around the world are being showcased from Wednesday in the first-ever Twitter fiction festival, held over five days on the microblogging site.

The virtual event, taking place in five languages ? Arabic, English, French, Italian and Spanish ? will run from November 28 to December 2, according to the social network?s official blog (blog.twitter.com).

While everyone is free to take part under the #twitterfiction hashtag, the festival?s selection panel, made up of US publishing industry experts, picked 29 entries from around the world to highlight on a dedicated page, at mobile.twitter.com/hashtag/twitterfiction.

The Twitter media team?s head of research and development Andrew Fitzgerald stressed the festival was ?not a competition.?

?There will be no winner, we just want to showcase creative storytelling,? he told AFP ahead of the event.

A young American women, Elliott Holt (@elliottholt), will open the ball on Wednesday at 2400 GMT, with a crime story that plays on the idea of a Twitter feed used as evidence.

Among the tales on offer ? which come from a mix of published and novice writers ? Lucy Coats (@lucycoats) from Northampton in Britain will re-tell 100 Greek myths in 100 Tweets.

London-based Faiq Muneef will be tweeting an Arabic language story called ?The Crying Canary? from Sunday at 1300 GMT.

From Thursday to Sunday at 0900 GMT, @00serialTW will be unfurling a stream of tales inspired by the work of Italian writer Italo Calvino.

Comments are moderated. Please keep them clean and brief.

A Short Fuse For Fusion As Ignition Misses Deadline

A worker inspects a huge target chamber at the National Ignition Facility in California, in 2001, where beams from 192 lasers are aimed at a pellet of fusion fuel in the hopes of creating nuclear fusion.

The National Ignition Facility in Livermore, Calif., has been called a modern-day moonshot, a project of "revolutionary science," and "the mother of all boondoggles."

NIF, as it's called, is a $5 billion, taxpayer-funded superlaser project whose goal is to create nuclear fusion ? basically a tiny star inside a laboratory. But so far, that hasn't happened.

At first glance, NIF sounds like something out of a comic book from the 1950s. But NIF director Ed Moses disagrees slightly, saying in 2008: "I think we're working on something far more far out, and far cooler than anything in science fiction or fantasy."

The idea behind NIF is to direct a laser the size of a football field ? 192 lasers, actually ? at one tiny capsule the size of a peppercorn filled with hydrogen. It would create degrees of heat and pressure never before achieved in a lab.

A hydrogen-filled target called a hohlraum is displayed inside the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California in 2009. Enlarge Bloomberg/Getty Images

Bloomberg/Getty Images

A hydrogen-filled target called a hohlraum is displayed inside the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California in 2009.

"We will raise the temperature of the target to a hundred million degrees," Moses said. "That's higher temperature and more pressure than exists at the center of our sun."

That's so hot that the hydrogen atoms would enter into a state of controlled nuclear fusion. This is not nuclear fission, where energy is generated by splitting atoms ? that happens every day in nuclear power plants. It's the opposite ? fusion ? smashing them together.

And it's important to realize this concept, controlled nuclear fusion, is one of the most fabled dreams in science, something that has eluded generations of physicists.

So when NIF opened, there was a lot of excitement.

"I cannot wait for this to become a reality here," said California's then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was at NIF's dedication in 2009. George Miller, then the head of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where NIF is based, was there too. Everyone seemed to believe ignition ? that moment the fusion chain reaction begins ? was right around the corner.

"I think we will get ignition," Miller said. "I think we'll get ignition relatively shortly after we turn the facility on."

Now, fast forward 3 1/2 years.

"We just haven't gotten it to burn yet," Moses said last month. He has been doing a lot of these interviews lately, because Oct. 1 was a deadline, set by the agency that oversees NIF ? the National Nuclear Security Administration ? for the project to have achieved fusion. But they just can't get the conditions right.

And Moses doesn't put too much stock in deadlines.

"We never guaranteed anything on any date," he says. "And people have to sort of get used to that. That's what great science is."

Nevertheless, the project's top brass now has some explaining to do. This month, Energy Secretary Steven Chu is required to tell Congress why NIF hasn't met its goal, despite costing taxpayers more than $5 billion so far.

For Christopher Paine, director of the nuclear program at the Natural Resources Defense Council, it'll be a giant "I told you so" moment.

"This project has gone on a long time," he says. "Billions have been invested. But to what end?"

Why, in other words, are we doing this?

It turns out there are three answers to that question, which were highlighted by a promotional video from NIF in 2009.

Reason No. 1: Clean energy.

Nuclear fusion, like fission, creates energy. But it's much more powerful and can run on hydrogen, which leaves no radioactive waste.

This could mean virtually unlimited clean energy. It's a big reason scientists have been chasing the fusion dream for so long. But critics say even if NIF works, we'd still be decades away from plugging its technology into the grid.

Reason No. 2: Global security and weapons testing.

This, actually, is the primary intent of NIF, and it has to do with the fact that actual nuclear bomb tests are banned worldwide. With NIF, you could get around that, by testing nuclear reactions inside its tiny pellet.

Reason No. 3: To "advance our understanding of the universe."

This basic research piece is the goal NIF director Ed Moses is really emphasizing these days. He points to the search for a famous subatomic particle.

"You know the Higgs Boson was just discovered at the LHC in CERN, right?" At a cost, he notes, of $10 billion. "Was it late? Was it early? Was it on time?"

The answer, he says: Who cares? This is the stuff of Grand Challenge Science, and you can't put a timeline on it.

"It's not Grand Challenge Science if you know the answer before you start," he says, "and this is exactly that."

That's the case NIF's advocates will have to make to Congress this month, and it's worked so far. After all, NIF has something for everyone: Democrats like clean energy; Republicans like weapons security.

MUNSTER: Here's Why Apple Didn't Release A ... - Business Insider

Business Insider

Gene Munster

?

Analyst Gene Munster said Apple didn't release a TV set this year because it couldn't get a television screen it was happy with.

At our last IGNITION conference in 2011, Munster predicted Apple would have announced a TV by now, and started selling it at the start of 2013.

That hasn't happened, obviously.

Speaking at our IGNITION conference this year, Munster said he spoke with sources in the Asian supply chain about Apple's television plans. Those sources said that Apple had requested a specific type of screen for a TV, an indium gallium zinc oxide or IGZO screen. Manufacturers were having trouble making that screen for a big-screen TV.

But doesn't Apple need deals with cable and content companies? Munster doesn't think that's a big issue. He thinks it all comes down to solving a hardware problem.

Obama says debt-cutting deal can be reached soon - Wed, 28 Nov 2012 PST

November 28, 2012 in Nation/World

Jim Kuhnhenn Associated Press

'); $("#content-tool-box-"+tool_name).jqm({trigger:this,overlay:20}); } }); });

?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he believes that members of both parties can reach a ?framework? on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, making his case with a mix of optimism and pressure on congressional Republicans to keep tax rates from rising on the middle?class.

Obama, pushing ahead with his campaign to increase revenue by hiking taxes on wealthier Americans, was joined by about a dozen middle-class Americans at a White House event in the midst of negotiation on how to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at year?s end when across-the-board tax hikes and steep spending cuts kick?in.

?I am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and get this issue resolved in bipartisan fashion so that American families, American businesses have some certainty going into next year,? Obama?said.

He took special note of reports that some Republicans have expressed a willingness to extend the current expiring tax rates for households earning less than $250,000. Conservative Oklahoma GOP Rep. Tom Cole told GOP colleagues in a private meeting on Tuesday that it?s better to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of taxpayers than engage in a prolonged fight that risks increasing taxes on everyone. Cole is a longtime GOP loyalist and a confidant of House Speaker John Boehner,?R-Ohio.

?I?m glad to see, if you?ve been reading the papers lately, that more and more Republicans in Congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach,? Obama said, noting that the Senate has already passed legislation to extend current rates to those middle class?taxpayers.

?The Democrats in the House are ready to vote for that same bill today,? he said. ?If we can get a few House Republicans to agree as well, I?ll sign this bill as soon as Congress sends it my way. I?ve got to repeat: I?ve got a pen. I?m ready to sign?it.?

He made an appeal to the public to pressure Congress, arguing that similar efforts late last year to extend a payroll tax cut resulted in congressional?passage.

?When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold, Congress listens,? he?said.

While expressing confidence that he and Congress could strike a bargain for a ?framework in the coming?weeks,?

Obama says we need to ?approach this problem with the middle-class in?mind.?

The president is urging the public to pressure Congress through social media, pointing to (hastag)My2K on Twitter ? a reference to the estimated $2,200 tax increase a typical middle-class family of four would see if the Bush tax cuts?expire.

The president is also meeting with corporate executives at the White House on Wednesday and then traveling to Pennsylvania on Friday to push for upper income bracket earners to pay higher tax rates. It?s part of a campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress to support raising taxes on the?wealthy.

As a mom, finding the best organic products for my baby has proven to be a bigger challenge than I anticipated. There are so many products out there that it can very easily become overwhelming. As I was looking for safe and organic products, I came across this great online store: Organically Hatched.

Organically Hatched is an Canadian store that offers tons of safe, green, and organic products for your little one. They basically take the guessing work out of finding the best organic products! They have everything you can possibly need from bottles, to clothes and pacifiers, and feeding, grooming, and potty training products! For the Holiday Season, they also have tons of toys including crafts, bath toys, dolls, and wooden toys. Oh, they also offer great products for Moms and Dads.

Here is a small sample of the products you can find at Organically Hatched:

For this review, I received an iPlay Aqua Bottle, Dimpleskins Sniffles Rub, Dimpleskins Boo Boo Goo, and Natural Ouch Balm by All Things Jill.

I was already familiar with iPlay. It is a well-known company that offers great baby and children products. The bottle that we received is very cute. It is bright translucent pink and has small fish, a turtle and a starfish on it. I like that it is a straw bottle. My daughter has been able to drink from a straw for months so she adopted this new bottle right away. I like that it is a good size: it can contain a little over 12oz. The best feature in my opinion is the cover. It?s easy to flip and ensures that the straw stays clean. The bottle is also?PVC, BPA, phthalate and lead free!

The Dimpleskins Sniffles Rub and Boo Boo Goo as well as the Natural Ouch Balm are all 100% natural products. The Boo Boo Goo and the Natural Ouch Balm are made to soothe and help scrapes, cuts, and bruises heal. The Sniffles Rub helps with congestion and can be applied to the chest, back, and under the nose. I like that all the products had a subtle scent. Since it is difficult for my daughter to give feedback on such products, I decided to test them myself. I was impressed by how all 3 products are quickly absorbed by the skin. The Boo Boo Goo and the Natural Ouch Balm were really helpful to soothe the burning of cuts and scrapes. The Sniffles Rub had a very pleasant Eucalyptus Lemon scent which I personally find relaxing. I also found it helpful to help me breathe better. It didn?t burn my skin, didn?t get too warm like some of the popular anti-congestion rubs do.

African-Americans "Disadvantaged in Every Area of Personal ...

Now that two biggest days for consumer spending, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, are over, finance website Online Loan 24 is taking some time to look at African-American spending, savings, and overall buying power.

Online 24 put together an infographic, entitled, ?African-American Personal Finance: Down, Not Out?:

Most depressingly, the infographic highlights that African Americans are ?disadvantaged in just about every area of personal finance.? The creators of the infographic used two major reports -?Nielsen?s??The State of the African-American Consumer??and Prudential?s??The African American Financial Experience?? ? to reach that conclusion.

The report also notes that there is an information deficit among African Americans, many of whom don?t know that they can order a credit report for free.

Most striking of all, though, was the statistic showing that 54 percent of blacks have no savings at all, compared to only 27 percent of whites who have no savings. This aligns with a previous study?which revealed that the median wealth for single black females was a paltry $100.

However, we should note that even though ?buying power? is often used as a metric, it shouldn?t be interpreted as encouragement to spend, since it was buying and spending which led many African- Americans into a financial hole. African-Americans would probably benefit from spending more time focusing on building wealth, and less time fighting crowds to get their hands on deals. If this Great Recession has revealed anything at all, it?s that consumerism is not the path to economic security.

ANALYSIS: Egypt learns the art of politics amid protests

Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi, who had granted himself sweeping new powers that would have made all of his rulings immune to judicial review, is facing continued public outcry despite his decision to soften the decree by limiting those rulings to 'sovereign' matters. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

News analysis

Last week?s sweeping power grab by Egypt?s President Mohammed Morsi has thrown the country?s political elite into crisis, and prompted tens of thousands of Egyptians to take to the streets in protest. But much of the fury over his most recent moves probably has more to do with the way he chose to act than what he has actually done.

The conflict roiling the Arab world?s most populous country has been painted by some international observers and many regular Egyptians as a struggle between autocratic Islamists and democratic secularists. Indeed, Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood party have angered many with how they managed to win power democratically and then tried to consolidate it by decrees.

In a move quickly pounced on by critics, Morsi?s decree last week gave the body charged with writing a draft constitution two more months to finish its work. The decree essentially prevents challenges to the president's rule until the end of the two-month transitional period so that any decision made by Morsi cannot be questioned by the judiciary.

If the so-called constituent assembly, the elected constitutional body that is now dominated by Islamists, would have dissolved, it would have been seen as a victory by many liberal and secular Egyptians.

But Morsi?s decree will allow the assembly to finish its essential work, Henry Smith of the international consultancy Control Risks told NBC News.

'Leave, leave': Egyptians gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest president's decree

"There was a risk that the body writing the constitution would be disbanded by legal judgments but according to his decree, we should see a draft in February," he added. "And if that is decided then we could have a new constitution by mid-2013."

As the struggle of the constituent assembly shows, Morsi and his government have been locked in a struggle with the judiciary.

And however dictatorial Morsi?s recent moves may have been, the judiciary is no paragon of democracy. Indeed, even many of the Brotherhood?s opponents think the judiciary is corrupt and packed with loyalists of deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The lack of accountability for the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution illustrates why many Egyptians do not trust the judiciary. None of the former regime officials brought to trial for these deaths has been convicted.

The judiciary also upheld the dissolution of parliament, halting essential efforts, such as reforming fiscal and economic policies meant to liberalize and jump-start the economy.

According to liberal and secular parties, the president ?didn't consult with them before issuing his decree on Thursday -- a claim disputed by Morsi's Freedom and Justice Party ? thus losing the opportunity to be seen as a leader willing to reach across political divides and interested in creating consensus.

And those protesting his power grab have reason to be suspicious. After all, Mubarak promised to be a one-term president at the beginning of what ended up as a 30-year rule.

In the end, Egypt is new to the art of politics and its actors unused to sharing power and debating issues publicly.

As international consultant Smith says: "Putting aside some of the autocratic elements of his recent decree, Morsi?s move could be seen as a positive move."

Thousands of Egyptians flood Cairo's Tahrir Square in protest of President Morsi, demanding he rescind decrees that granted him near-absolute powers. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Egypt.

New methods for cooling of ions developed

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Among the most important techniques developed in atomic physics over the past few years are methods that enable the storage and cooling of atoms and ions at temperatures just above absolute zero. Scientists from Bangalore and Mainz have now demonstrated in an experiment that captured ions can also be cooled through contact with cold atoms and may thus be stored in so-called ion traps in a stable condition for longer periods of time. This finding runs counter to predictions that ions would actually be heated through collisions with atoms.

The results obtained by the joint Indo-German research project open up the possibility of conducting future chemical experiments to generate molecular ions at temperatures as low as those that prevail in interstellar space.

Scientists of the Raman Research Institute in the Bangalore in India and the Institute of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany combined two techniques for their experiment. They captured neutral atoms in a magneto-optic trap, cooled them with laser light to a temperature close to absolute zero at minus 273.15 degrees Celsius, and also stored charged particles in an ion trap. For this purpose, Professor Dr. G?nter Werth had to set a Paul trap as used in Mainz in India, where it was combined with a magneto-optic trap. It was thus possible to trap ions and cold atoms at one and the same location to observe their development.

"The question was whether it would work at all," explains Werth. The experiment with rubidium ions and rubidium atoms then showed that the particles did actually exchange energy. The ions were effectively cooled during a collision with the cold atoms. As the scientists write in their article in Nature Communications, there are two fundamental processes that determine the outcome. During continuous cooling, the atoms indirectly extract energy from the trapped ions. In addition, the collision between ions and atoms causes both to exchange their charges and results in the transformation of a 'hot' ion into a 'cold' ion. As it is possible to maintain a constant concentration of atoms in the reservoir of the magneto-optic trap, the system has the capacity to cool a larger number of ions without immediate exhaustion of the atom reservoir.

The interaction between ions and atoms is particularly interesting to physicists because it is thought that similar interactions might also occur in the coldness of outer space. "The expectation is that the interaction of ions and atoms at very low temperatures will result in the formation of molecular ions. This is a process that we believe also occurs in inter-stellar space," says Werth.

Lower Hutt School Staff Discover Novopay Security... | Stuff.co.nz

A school's staff discovered Novopay allowed them to access and alter their own timesheet details, exposing another glitch in the pay system's security.

Two pay administrators at Sacred Heart College, in Lower Hutt, demanded immediate action from Novopay operator Talent2 yesterday after they came across the latest lapse.

By the end of the day they had been locked out of making changes, and the Education Ministry claimed the error never existed.

The latest case comes against a background of more than 8000 logged errors in teachers' pay since Novopay was introduced in August. They include overpayments, underpayments, and sometimes no payments at all.

Australian firm Talent2, which runs Novopay under a $100 million contract with the ministry, is facing penalties of $50,000 each time the system botches the fortnightly payroll cycle, and chief executive John Rawlinson flew to New Zealand last week to deal with the barrage of criticism.

Sacred Heart deputy principal Alison Spencer, who is also an accountant, said she could access her own pay details, and add and validate her own leave.

And although she could not change her salary, she could have added as much extra overtime as she wished, and so could executive officer Irene Newrick.

Mrs Spencer was so shocked that she walked straight out of her office and told an auditor who happened to be at the school.

"I just need to tell you what I have just done. I've just accessed my pay," she told the auditor, who replied: "I don't think I want to hear this."

"There's no way I should have access to my pay, and Irene have access to her pay," Mrs Spencer said. "I can go in and do whatever I want to do, which is not good."

Ms Newrick said the previous Datacom system always needed a strong audit trail. "I could never ever sign off anything on my own.

"We assumed, stupidly, [that Novopay] would be locked, and we had never checked it.

"There may be other schools out there who also have this problem and aren't aware of it. I suspect they're in there now frantically looking at all the others," she said after dis- covering they were finally locked out.

Sacred Heart principal Lisl Prendergast said her staff were "too honest for their own good", but the temptation should never be there.

"What they should have is access to do things they need to do, but they shouldn't have access to their own pay."

In February, David Don, who was executive officer of St Patrick's College, Wellington, admitted taking more than $126,000 from the school after an audit of its 2010 accounts. He was jailed for two years.

Post Primary Teachers' Association president Robin Duff said the latest glitch was alarming, and should be "filling the ministry and secretary with fear and trepidation".

"Given the assurance we've had that this is a secure system, pretty worryingly it blows it out of the water."

Education Ministry group manager Rebecca Elvy denied there was ever an error as claimed by the Sacred Heart staff, because they could not amend their own details without someone else submitting the changes.

Askinglaw ? Blog Archive ? Can You Fight a Traffic Ticket

Receiving a traffic ticket is not something that you would ever enjoy. Many people tend to assume that getting a traffic means you have to pay it. However, you also have an option of fighting the traffic ticket. Most people do not consider fighting traffic tickets as they feel it would be a futile attempt on their part as the court system always seems to be on the side of the police that issued the ticket. Traffic courts are known for not entertaining lengthy defenses and most people assume that the statement of the police officer would be given more weight during the trial.

Fighting traffic tickets involves taking unpaid leaves from work, reviewing all the official documents, interviewing the witnesses and gathering evidences. But most of the legal experts believe that those, who can present their argument in a compelling way at court, must make the effort of fighting the ticket that has been issued against them. There are some things that you would need to learn about before you can think of fighting the ticket.

Being pulled over by the police can be nerve wracking. However, it is important that you stay nice but alert whenever an officer stops you. You may be tempted to protest and express your views on how unfair the officer?s decision is. However, you must remember that this isn?t the appropriate time for you to debate all the details of your alleged violation. The traffic ticket will have all the information regarding how much you would have to pay (if you let go of your right to trial) as well as when you would have to appear in the traffic court. Many of the legal experts believe it is unwise for you to mail the ticket with a check. The amount that will be printed on your ticket may be the maximum amount which can be reduced if you decide to fight the ticket. Even if you lose in the trial, the judge may still consider reducing the fine.

In order to fight the ticket, you would first need to understand the charges that have been brought against you. There are mainly two kinds of traffic violations and you would need to understand these two categories in order to understand how severe your charges are. Violations that will only result in penalty points on your driver?s license or fines are known as civil infractions. If you do not have a very compelling argument, it would always be better for you to consult a lawyer when pleading out of civil infractions.

The second classification of the traffic violations is more serious. All the serious speeding offenses and moving violations are considered as traffic misdemeanor. This is the designation that always adds a criminal court factor to the trial. If you have been charged with traffic misdemeanor, fighting the ticket in court may be worth your effort.

No matter what sort of charges you are facing, if you have received a traffic ticket and are looking to fight it, it is always wise to consult expert advice from a legal professional. Get in touch with a Las Vegas Ticket Lawyer before you go through with your decision of fighting the ticket.

About the Author- Mark Hall is expertise in criminal law. Mark has his own blogs and websites where he talks about criminal law and the different aspects of various criminal cases. In his recent articles Mark has discussed about fighting traffic ticket. He suggests you to hire a Las Vegas Ticket Lawyer as soon as possible.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012: Wrap Up, Highlights and - Twitch

The 4th Doha Tribeca Film Festival wrapped up proceedings on Saturday night, bringing to end an enthralling eight day celebration of World Cinema, including an impressive selection of films from the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region, and a glimpse at the burgeoning industry that is sparking into life in Qatar. Twitch was in attendance for the second half of the festival, where I was able to sample of variety of feature films, shorts and documentaries from around the region, as well as savour the unique delights of Doha itself.

Launched in 2009, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival is building some serious momentum in the city, screening more than 80 feature films from all over the world, to a local audience largely unfamiliar with cinema beyond Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters. The centrepiece of the fledgling Doha Film Institute's calendar of events to promote cinematic interest and artistry in Qatar, the DTFF programme can already stand proudly alongside many major international film festivals.?

This year's festival opened with Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which examines the growing East/West cultural divide post-9/11, while the festival wrapped up on a lighter note, with the ambitious 3D animated family film, Rise of the Guardians. The Contemporary World Cinema programme for 2012 included new works from renowned filmmakers such as Ken Loach (The Angel's Share), Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) and Matteo Garrone (Reality), alongside special screenings of top tier commercial selections including Ben Affleck's much-lauded Argo, Martin McDonaugh's Seven Psychopaths, Yash Chopra's triumphant return to filmmaking, Till I Breathe This Life, and David O' Russell's awards favourite, Silver Linings Playbook.?

Younger cinephiles were not to be left out either, with a considerable amount of the festival's energies going into all-day family events stationed along the gorgeous Katara Cultural Village beachfront. Events ranged from workshops and competitions to free outdoor screenings of undisputed world cinema classics, including Miyazaki Hayao's My Neighbour Totoro, Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso and Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

My attentions fell primarily on the Arab Film Competition titles, which comprised of seven narrative features, seven documentaries and thirteen shorts. Not unexpectedly, the themes of these films fell almost entirely into the familiar categories of the Arab Spring, which has swept across the MENA region since December 2010, as well as religious fundamentalism, gender inequality and illegal immigration. Particular highlights in the Narrative Feature section included Merzak Allouache's The Repentant, an incredibly engaging drama following a young freedom fighter as he attempts to renounce his past crimes and start a new life. Another favourite, Nabil Ayouch's Horses of God, follows young impoverished brothers in a Moroccoan slum, as they evolve from ambitious opportunists into radicalised suicide bombers. Both films had their world premieres at Cannes earlier this year and will likely get theatrical releases in a number of major markets.?

In the Documentary Feature section, Damien Ounouri's Fidai is the incredibly personal story of an ageing former FLN fighter in Algeria, who decades later, revisits the scenes of his numerous war crimes, and painfully reenacting some of the darkest moments from his past. Hanan Abdalla's In The Shadow of a Man, meanwhile, paints heart-rending portraits of four different Egyptian women, who all face incredible persecution and prejudice in their chosen life paths, due almost solely to their gender and marital status.

In the Arab Short Film Competition, the strongest entry was undoubtedly Sanctity, from Saudi?actress and filmmaker Ahd. The story of a young pregnant widow who is forced to completely reinvent her life if she is to protect herself and her unborn child yielded one of the best performances of the festival. Pitting Areej, her heroine, against two wildly different men, each of whom pose both a threat and a possible avenue of escape, Ahd does an incredible job of illustrating the complexities of modern living for Saudi women today. Beyond the compelling story, however, Sanctity is also directed with assured style and understanding for mood and aesthetics, while leaving the narrative with a tantalising open-ended finale.

Elsewhere in the festival programme I was able to catch the provocative documentary Valentino's Ghost, together with an extended post-screening discussion from the film's director, Michael Singh. A passionate, if entirely one-sided exploration, the film charts the changing depiction of Arabs in Hollywood and Western media. Back in the early days of Cinema, Rudolph Valentino was Hollywood's biggest star in a string of Sheik?films, in which the Arab was a symbol of exotic, sexualised heroism. Douglas Fairbanks continued this tradition in The Arabian Nights, but soon after, the Arab quickly became synonymous onscreen with the red indian - the unruly native who must be contained and conquered - after which their destiny was seemingly set in stone. By the mid-1990s, Arab terrorists were the go-to villain in Hollywood blockbusters, with everything from James Cameron's True Lies to Disney's Aladdin depicting Arabs as shifty, untrustworthy, fanatical and out for blood. There was a suggestion in the film's introduction that Valentino's Ghost would not be allowed to screen in the USA without some 30 minutes cut out of it. While Singh was anxious to suggest that the film's incendiary accusations, that a mostly Jewish-run film industry is conspiring to paint a negative view of Arabs, surely the film's heavy reliance on unlicensed clips from dozens of Hollywood movies proves the more realistic stumbling block.

The last section of the festival worth mentioning was the Made in Qatar showcase of rising talent within the tiny Gulf state. There is clearly a conscious effort being made by the Doha Film Institute to encourage filmmakers to widen their perspective and ambition beyond simply covering the subjects that proved so prevalent in the Arab Film Competition. Not to say that these areas are unimportant or pass?, but the emphasis here is on ensuring that Qatar builds a film industry that can endure, self-sustain and meet the needs and desires of an audience raised on blockbuster entertainment. In only it second year, Made in Qatar received more than 70 entries for this year's festival, made by Qatar-based filmmakers of 13 different nationalities.

My DTFF experience was bookended by two Made in Qatar features, starting with Mohammed Al-Ibrahim and Ahmed Al-Baker's zombie thriller, Lockdown: Red Moon Escape and closing up with music documentary Lyrics Revolt, from filmmakers Shannon Farhoud, Ashlene Ramadan, Melanie Fridgant and Rana Khaled Al Khatib. Both films display an infectous youthfulness and vitality, as well as praise-worthy technical competence behind the camera.?

Lockdown begins as a knockabout buddy comedy that sees two friends marooned in the desert after blowing a tire, only to be set upon by a horde of wandering undead. Our hero escapes with his life, but is picked up by the military and jailed, where he faces supernatural challenges of a wildly different nature. Lyrics Revolt, meanwhile, taps into the rebellious exuberance of the Arab hip-hop scene that evolved out of France and North Africa in the late-1980s to become the soundtrack of the Arab Spring movement. Artists from all over the region speak about their influences, musical mission and the importance of their message to today's Arab youth, and the film boasts an incredible soundtrack that deserves recognition on its own.

Beyond the cinemas and screening rooms of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, attending the festival gave me a brief but memorable chance to explore the booming desert metropolis of Doha. Fifteen years since my last, even shorter visit, the city is almost unrecognisable. My hotel, in the newly regentrified Souq Waqif, was perfectly positioned to give me a taste for the more traditional aspects of the city. While we learned that the market places and cobbled streets of the souq were actually only a couple of years old, one would be forgiven for thinking we had been transported back in time many decades, and the warm air remains rich with the scent of spices and tobacco smoke. The festival's press centre was located here, and proved an ideal location to meet our everyday needs. I have never savoured fruit juices as sweet as those available here, together with bountiful cups of coffee and incredibly strong local tea.?

Over the other side of town, however, at the Katara Cultural Village, the vibe was one of vivacious modernity. An eclectic barrage of skyscrapers litters West Bay, displaying an uproarious diversity of architectural styles that put Hong Kong's own expressive skyline to shame. For every newly constructed hotel or steely apartment complex were three more in various stages of construction. Doha is clearly a city desperate to evolve and compete with its neighbour, Dubai, to be one of the most economically aggressive cities in the region, if not the world. One can only hope that the people of Qatar are as enthusiastic to compete on an artistic level as they are on a purely economic one.?

The Doha Film Institute is primed and ready to lead and nurture a new generation of filmmakers, and hopefully together they can cultivate a vibrant domestic film industry worthy of sharing with the rest of the world. It has been an incredibly exciting and unique experience to get a glimpse of a film industry in such an early phase, and thanks to this inspiring and eye-opening opportunity awarded me by the Doha Film Institute and Doha Tribeca Film Festival, it's a region that now has my full attention. ?

My deepest thanks and acknowledgements to Doha Film Institute's Shamir Allibhai, Variety Arabia's Joseph Fahim and EatSleepLiveFilm's David Hall, whose insight and conversation helped inform this article.
