Bill Gates recently went to Mexico to announce a partnership with another billionaire Carlos Slim aimed at boosting Mexican agricultural productivity. Here?s another story on the event from the Guardian. Discover magazine journalist Keith Kloor noted that Gates, at the event, reportedly celebrated Mexico?s dramatic progress against poverty ? cutting it from 15% to less than 2% today.

The only problem, Kloor contends, is that this rate of progress seems to have missed the attention of the World Bank and other organizations who track poverty. Most expert sources, he reports, say nearly half of Mexico?s population still lives in poverty.

Bill Gates is the world?s most generous humanitarian. He is also very ambitious and self-assured. Last month in the Wall Street Journal, Gates outlined his plan to ?fix the world?s greatest problems,? as the headline of his piece stated. (It is reproduced from his annual letter.)
