(AP) ? Now that former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is a Democrat, pretty much everyone in Florida's political world expects him to seek his old job.

"I will consider it, and I will think about it," Crist told The Associated Press by phone while boating off of Miami and before a planned dinner Saturday evening with former Democratic governor and Sen. Bob Graham.

The former Republican governor revealed his long-anticipated conversion Friday, after more than two years as an independent. He made the announcement on Twitter and included a photo of his new voter registration form, which he filled out at the White House.

Earlier Saturday, Florida Republicans gathered for a meeting and said they will be extra motivated to re-elect Gov. Rick Scott if his opponent is Crist, who left the GOP during his 2010 run for Senate.

"Bring it on," Peter Feaman, the party's national committeeman, told a room of Republican activists. "That man sat at my house, in my kitchen, at my breakfast table and told me he was a Ronald Reagan Republican. OK, I'm putting my boots on, because guess what? You lied to me."

Should the 56-year-old Crist run, he could become the first person to run for Florida governor as a Republican and as a Democrat. Crist only served one term before choosing to run for Senate instead of re-election.

Republicans, anticipating the switch, have been attacking him for months. As Crist campaigned with President Barack Obama and other Democrats during the fall, Republicans ran a television ad and issued scores of press releases pointing out his previous conservative positions.

"I really feel at home. A lot of it was inspired by what Democrats have stood for, and honestly, friends have told me most of my political life, 'Charlie, you're really a Democrat and you just don't know it," Crist said.

Crist was a moderate governor and met often with Democratic leaders. At dinners in the governor's mansion, he includes both Republicans and Democrats at his head table. He endeared himself to the teachers union by vetoing a Republican priority bill that would have stripped teachers of tenure and based merit raises on test scores. He also won over many black leaders by championing civil rights issues, prompting one black lawmaker to describe him as the first black governor.

Since leaving the GOP, Crist, who called himself "the people's governor" while in office, has criticized the party for going too far to the right. Crist has already criticized Scott for refusing to extend early voting despite pleas from U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and other Democrats.

"The leadership of the party lately has gone off the cliff, I wasn't comfortable enough," Crist said. "What I love most about our state is our people ... I just have a feeling in my heart right now that leadership doesn't appreciate that fact."

Crist was elected governor in 2006 as a Republican, succeeding two-term Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. A popular governor and considered one of the best campaigners in the state, Crist used his charisma and feel-good messages to win over voters.

But many conservatives became disenchanted with Crist after he hugged President Barack Obama at a rally to push for the $787 billion stimulus package, which passed in 2009 with virtually no Republican support.

Although Crist was the early favorite for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010, conservatives began to rally around the bid of Marco Rubio in the 2010 GOP primary, prompting Crist's independent bid.

If he runs for his old job, Crist will have better name recognition than any other Democrat seeking the governor's seat, including former state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, who lost a hard-fought campaign to Scott.

Scott's approval ratings haven't come close to what Crist had in office. Scott, a former hospital chain CEO and tea party favorite who never ran for office before spending nearly $80 million of his and his family's money to win election, isn't considered a natural politician. He can be an awkward speaker, and it has taken a while for him to grow comfortable in the spotlight.

But that doesn't mean Crist would have an easy time winning. During primary elections, only about 20 percent of voters turn out, and they are the most faithful in the party. Activists on both sides will remember the many elections in which they fought Crist, who often called himself a Ronald Reagan and Jeb Bush Republican.

"We're going to be ready to play ball," said Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry, noting that Crist previously praised former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, criticized Obama and held conservative views on abortion.

And it's not easy switching parties after reaching political success. After nearly three decades as a Republican U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter switched to the Democratic party rather than face a potentially uphill primary battle against a conservative challenger in 2010. Obama and Senate Democrats welcomed him, but Specter lost in that year's Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak, who went on to lose in the fall to Republican Pat Toomey. Then there's former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, who won office as a Democrat and then lost his 1992 re-election bid as a Republican.

"The strong Democrats are the ones that vote in the non-presidential year, and they're the ones that are most likely to have a problem with Crist," said Democratic pollster David Beattie.

Beattie, however, said Crist has been smart about the transition because he got people used to the idea of him being a Democrat. After losing his independent bid for Senate, he began doing public events with Democrats. His wife, Carole, switched from Republican to Democrat. Then he began backing Democratic candidates in Florida, then Obama. And he spoke at last summer's Democratic National Convention.

"There are a lot of people who say, 'Oh, I thought he did that a long time ago,'" Beattie said. "I don't think he's stopped campaigning over the last two years."

EdwardTeller wrote a new diary post: As Obama Prepares to Do Battle Against Washington and Colorado, Here's the Pointy End of His Spear

Need I say more? ?No?

Well, I will anyway.

The New York Times reported Thursday that high level talks are going on within the Obama administration on how to deal with Washington and Oregon, both of whose voters helped bring Obama his second term, and both of which had more voters support legalizing recreational marijuana use than voted for the president. ?Obama is the third president in a row to have used marijuana in his younger days.

The NYT article, which uses so many anonymous White House sources it reeks of ?trial balloon,? notes:

One option is for federal prosecutors to bring some cases against low-level marijuana users of the sort they until now have rarely bothered with, waiting for a defendant to make a motion to dismiss the case because the drug is now legal in that state. The department could then obtain a court ruling that federal law trumps the state one.

Will those kids be well-heeled white ones, with parents willing to spend what it usually takes to get a diversion or some other tool used by the well off to keep a possession charge from ruining a young person?s career hopes? ?Or will those kids be of color and not well off, as are most victims of the war on drugs when played out against random or targeted users.

The main constituents of continued prohibition are the prison industrial complex, the war on drugs industrial complex, the Mexican drug cartels and big pharma, with the alcohol industry supportive in some ways. ?Apparently, the biggest supporter of a heavy crackdown in the administration isn?t the dimwitted DEA head, Michele Leonhart. ?It is VP Biden:

[T]he politician who coined the term ?drug czar? ? Joe Biden ? continues to guide the administration?s hard-line drug policy. ?The vice president has a special interest in this issue,? Sabet says. ?As long as he is vice president, we?re very far off from legalization being a reality.?

I?ve never written an essay here before on the question of marijuana legalization. ?I?ve seldom commented on my own relationship with the drug.

I first tried it in early 1967, while serving in the US Army. ?At times, when I was young, I used it a lot, probably too much. ?When my kids were young, I would go for over a year sometimes without having any, only imbibing with my Washington state sculptor friends when visiting them there. ?During that same time, I was working in privatized corrections in Alaska. ?I saw then way too many examples of how drug enforcement is used racially in a negative way.

Obama?s administration is saddled with Gonzales v. Raich and a whole shitload of international treaties. ?But if there ever was a time for a president to cut a Gordian knot, this issue seems to be the prime candidate.

Andrew Sullivan, proposing open debate rather than knot-cutting, concluded an essay on this today:

Let?s have this debate openly and honestly. Let the government prove that marijuana is as dangerous as heroin and should be treated as such. The very process will reveal the anachronism of the provision itself and the racial and cultural panic that created it. The very discussion will point to an inevitable, scientific conclusion that the current federal policy is based on nothing.

So do nothing, Mr president, with respect to these states and their legitimate decisions. Set the DEA?s priorities so that this trivial, medically useful, pleasure is not in any way a priority for law enforcement. Let the states figure this out, as they are on marriage equality.

Lead from behind. An entire generation is ahead of you.

In the spirit of ?being pissed off at this administration?s weighing whether or not ?to bring some cases against low-level marijuana users of the sort they until now have rarely bothered with,? ?I?m going to light one up, something I haven?t done in a while.

Will you join me?

Wooden Hylian Shield

While you eventually ditch the weak, wooden starter shield in Zelda games, this is no Deku Shield!?Deviantart user clefrayearth used his father?s wood workshop to create a life-size replica of the Hylian Shield. He has also posted additional images showing different steps of the creation process.

While he could have simply created a flat shield and called it a day, clefrayearth?went so far as to give the shield a curved appearance, like in the games. He used a variety of tools and resources to make this replica, and the outcome is incredibly impressive.

WTF Friday: A Website in Japan Lets You Rent a Boyfriend

japan

You guys remember that movie, ?The Wedding Date? starring Debra Messing? She is invited to her sister?s wedding and needs a date because her younger sister is marrying her ex?s best friend, so she?s like obviously bound to run into the man that broke her heart. She needs a date quick because she has to prove that she really can ?have it all.? So she hires the sexy Dermont Mulroney and they fall in love. It?s actually totally adorable and they dance to Micheal Buble in it, so yeah. Anyway, that is real life in Japan.

Apparently, you can rent a ?boyfriend? in Japan for $364 US dollars. You can also rent girlfriends. The premise? Sometimes people just want warm bodies to sleep next to. So you call up this company and a member of their ?cast? can perform certain duties, but they can?t sleep with you or kiss you. Essentially you?re paying, like, $400 dollars to sleep next to someone. I don?t know about you but the only reason I can stand sleeping next to someone is because I have an actual emotional attachment to them. Otherwise, I?d just like to?ya know..sleep and not worry about getting hit in the face by uncontrollable limbs.

There?s a multitude of things you can get these men to do like clean your house (as long as it?s not uncomfortable) and take them on dates (as long as you pay). There?s even a date package which includes a trip for two to Tokyo Disney for, like, $800. If you want to specify which cast member you want to spend the night with it?s an extra $24 dollars. I mean?I can?t help but think this is borderline prostitution. Although sex is explicitly forbidden, I can?t imagine these men aren?t getting some and keeping their mouths shut. Am I right or am I right?

So I mean, if you?re lonely, I?d say go for it.

Florida's Crist Changes Parties; Colbert Won't Replace DeMint In Senate (Really)

That fledgling Democrat within Charlie Crist, former Republican governor of Florida, has emerged at last:

This should be The Decision That Surprised No One, since Crist was a featured speaker at the Democratic National Convention last September, and had been a registered independent before that.

As NPR's S.V. Date writes,

"Once a popular Republican governor in Florida, Crist was on the short list for vice president in 2008 but lost that nod to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. In 2009, he had a falling out with Florida conservatives after embracing President Obama's stimulus program. At the time, Crist had been regarded as the frontrunner for the GOP Senate nomination in 2010, but he was challenged by Tea Party favorite Marco Rubio. Falling behind Rubio in the polls, Crist dropped out of the Republican primary to seek the Senate seat as an independent. Rubio won easily."

Sadly, Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert won't get a warm political welcome from South Carolina Republican governor Nikki Haley. This week, Colbert urged fans to pester Haley to name him to replace outgoing GOP Sen. Jim DeMint, who's leaving to run the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

But it ain't happening. Apparently, Haley flunked him on her Facebook page for failing to remember a key historical fact about South Carolina:

"Stephen, thank you for your interest in South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat and for the thousands of tweets you and your fans sent me.

But you forget one thing, my friend.

You didn't know our state drink. Big, big mistake."

South Carolina's state drink is milk. Got Milk, Stephen?
