Portway Swimming Club buoyant after council U-turn - Bristol24-7

A Bristol swimming club is celebrating after new rules which blocked them from delivering lessons were reversed by the city council.

Since April 1, Portway Swimming Club (PSC), based at Henbury Leisure Centre, has been forced to give lessons for its youngest learners in Bradley Stoke after Bristol City Council allowed sports centre operator SLM to have a monopoly on swimming lessons.

PSC members began their campaign in February, saying that a decision to centralise teaching services with the private firm SLM meant it could bring local family run clubs such as their club to an end.

In a letter to Bristol mayor George Ferguson, PSC said the legacy of last year?s Olympic Games, to inspire a generation, appeared to have made no impact on the council which appeared to want to ?actively favour? its private sector partner.

But yesterday it emerged BCC has now agreed to allow PSC to give lessons again and has launched a review of swimming lessons provision in the city.

In a letter to the club, Jonathan Amphlett, BCC Manager for Sports and Health Development, said: ?I?d like to inform you that Bristol City Council has asked the Amateur Swimming Association to work with the whole swimming community in Bristol to review swimming provision and in turn update and agree a new Swimming/Aquatic Strategy. This will also link to our wider sports commission to increase and improve sports and active recreation in the city

?With this in mind, we have taken the decision not to enforce any previous strategies at this time. Consequently, we are happy for you to continue to deliver your club activities at Henbury Leisure Centre until such a review and strategic direction is completed and agreed.

?Needless to say, we very much hope that your club will play a significant and active role in shaping this new and exciting strategy.?

Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie had supported the campaigners and thanked cabinet member Cllr Simon Cook for intervening in the dispute.

?This is a fantastic result for this great swimming club and I am delighted they will again be able to deliver high quality lessons for children of all ages and abilities,? she said.

?I hope that in future, swimming in Bristol can be a genuinely collaborative mission, which embraces, not excludes, all that our excellent swimming clubs have to offer.?
