When the dry lubricant, molybdenum disulfide, is stripped down to a single layer of atoms, a tightly bound quasi-particle comprised of two electrons and a hole forms with unique spin and valley properties, researchers from Case Western Reserve University and colleagues discovered.

These charged quasi-particles, called negative trions, can be manipulated to change the light absorbed and emitted from this two-dimensional semi-conducting crystal, opening it to potential use in new solar cells and other electronic devices that are controlled by light or designed to control light.

The discovery also opens up new opportunities to study what physicists call "many-body interactions"--in this case, the interactions among the charged particles--and a new concept of electronics called valleytronics.

The research is published in this week's online edition of Nature Materials.

"What we saw was something like a negative hydrogen iona positive charge bound to two negative charges," said Jie Shan, an associate professor of physics at Case Western Reserve and senior author of the paper.

The trions formed in the molybdenum disulfide crystal when the researchers applied a bias voltage on the back gate of a device called field-effect transistor. This was done at 10 degrees Kelvin, or -441 Fahrenheit. The electrons introduced by the bias voltage were linked to electron-hole pairs generated by absorption of photons, resulting in negatively charged trions.

"The interactions between charged particles in three-dimensional bulk materials are usually screened by the presence of other charges in the material. Because this material has an atomic thickness, the interactions between the charges are much stronger than in the natural bulk material due the drastically reduced screening," Shan explained. "The quasi particles are stable. Adding energy comparable to or larger than that of room temperature to the monolayer is required to break away the extra negative charge."

Because the trions are charged, they can be controlled by a bias electric field, Shan said. "This is very basic science; it is early, but this may offer a unique opportunity to use controllable and directional transport of optical excitation in a material, which could be useful for applications such as photovoltaics and optoelectronics."

Shan worked with her graduate student, Kelinang He, and, from Columbia University, Kin Fai Mak, a postdoctoral researcher, Tony F. Heinz, professor of physics and electrical engineering, Gwan Hyoung Lee postdoctoral researcher and James Hone, professor of mechanical engineering. Changgu Lee, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Sungkyunkwan University also contributed to the research.

The discovery of the trions increases the potential that this material can be used for valleytronics, the researchers say. Earlier this year, Mak, He, Shan and Heinz, and other research groups found they could control what's known as valley polarizationessential to valleytronics--in a single layer of molybdenum disulfide.

Conventional electronics rely on the control of the charge through materials. Spintronics use the spin degree of freedom of the charge carriers. Valleytronics rely on another property.

Because of symmetry, crystals frequently have independent, degenerate valleys in their energy bands. This so-called "valley" (or momentum) degree of freedom has been proposed as something that could be manipulated for new classes of electronic devices.

Using polarized light, Shan and fellow researchers were able to nudge electrons into a desired valley.

"The trions also show some interesting valley properties," Shan said. "But their valley lifetime may be very different, because it involves the interaction of three particles."

The researchers are continuing to probe the properties in a series of experiments.

Heading into Sunday, five NFL teams had a chance to clinch a playoff berth. Four of them succeeded.

The Patriots, Broncos and Falcons all clinched their divisions on Sunday, while the Texans clinched a spot in the AFC playoffs. But the Ravens, who would have clinched the AFC North if they had won and the Bengals had lost, instead clinched nothing, as they didn?t win, and the Bengals didn?t lose.

Below we provide the state of the playoff race through Sunday?s games, with the six playoff teams that would be in the postseason in each conference if the playoffs started today.

NFC

1. Falcons (11-1): Atlanta officially became the NFC South champions when the Buccaneers lost on Sunday, and the Falcons are also the overwhelming favorites to earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

2. 49ers (8-3-1): The 49ers are still holding onto the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, but their chances of catching the Falcons for the NFC?s top spot took a hit with today?s loss to the Rams.

3. Packers (8-4): Green Bay moved ahead of Chicago and into the NFC North lead on Sunday.

4. Giants (7-4): With a win over the Redskins on Monday night, the Giants would all but wrap up the NFC East, and would move ahead of the Packers and into the No. 3 spot in the conference.

5. Bears (8-4): Sunday?s loss to the Seahawks could hurt; it moves the Bears out of the lead in the NFC North.

6. Seahawks (7-5): Seattle now has a one-game lead in the NFC wild-card race.

In the mix: The 6-6 Buccaneers and Vikings could both still catch the Seahawks for the final wild-card spot. The 5-6 Redskins could still make waves in both the wild card race and the NFC East race if they beat the Giants on Monday night.

AFC

1. Texans (11-1): With a two-game lead over the rest of the conference, it looks like the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC will go through Houston.

2. Patriots (9-3): New England owns the tiebreaker edge over the 9-3 Ravens and 9-3 Broncos based on the Patriots? superior conference record.

3. Ravens (9-3): Baltimore drops to No. 3 in the conference after Sunday?s loss to Pittsburgh.

4. Broncos (9-3): If the playoffs started today, Peyton Manning?s old team would come to town for a Colts-Broncos first-round playoff game.

5. Colts (8-4): Sunday?s win over the Lions puts the Colts in the driver?s seat in the AFC wild card race.

6. Steelers (7-5): At the moment, Pittsburgh has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cincinnati and therefore owns the sixth and final playoff spot.

In the mix: The 7-5 Bengals visit Pittsburgh in Week 16, and the winner of that game will likely win the final AFC wild-card spot. Every other team in the AFC is 5-7 or worse and likely out of contention.

Russia says has new evidence against opposition leader

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian detectives said on Friday they had new evidence in the investigation into an outspoken Kremlin opponent and his associates who allegedly sought to stir mass disorder and overthrow President Vladimir Putin's government.

The federal Investigative Committee, a state body with extended powers, formally charged leftist opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov and two associates last month with organizing mass disorder and detained them ahead of trial.

The men deny the charges and say they are victims of Putin's crackdown on the opposition following mass protests against his 13-year rule.

Udaltsov has since been released but faces a sentence of up to 10 years if convicted. His two associates remain in detention.

The charges against them were based on hidden-camera footage broadcast by a pro-Kremlin channel that it said showed Udaltsov and his two associates conspiring with a Georgian politician to organize mass riots.

"Since then the investigation has moved further," the Committee said in a statement.

It said it had obtained evidence that Udaltsov and the two other men were conspiring with the "foreign citizens".

The Committee said it also has witness testimonies confirming the intentions of the group as well as information that Udaltsov's supporters had been abroad for training on how to ferment unrest.

Putin has signed laws increasing fines for violations at street demonstrations and tightening controls on foreign-funded, non-governmental organizations that Russia accuses of meddling in its domestic politics.

(AP) ? North Korea announced Saturday that it would attempt to launch a long-range rocket in mid-December, a defiant move just eight months after a failed April bid was widely condemned as a violation of a U.N. ban against developing its nuclear and missile programs.

The launch, set for Dec. 10 to 22, is likely to heighten already strained tensions with Washington and Seoul as the United States prepares for Barack Obama's second term as U.S. president and South Korea holds its own presidential election on Dec. 19.

This would be North Korea's second launch attempt under leader Kim Jong Un, who took power following his father Kim Jong Il's death nearly a year ago. The announcement by North Korea's space agency followed speculation overseas about stepped-up activity at North Korea's west coast launch pad captured in satellite imagery.

A spokesman for North Korea's Korean Committee for Space Technology said scientists have "analyzed the mistakes" made in the failed April launch and improved the precision of its Unha rocket and Kwangmyongsong satellite, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

KCNA said the launch was a request of late leader Kim Jong Il, whose Dec. 17, 2011, death North Koreans are expected to mark with some fanfare. The space agency said the rocket would be mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite, and maintained its right to develop a peaceful space program.

Washington considers North Korea's rocket launches to be veiled covers for tests of technology for long-range missiles designed to strike the United States, and such tests are banned by the United Nations.

North Korea has capable short- and medium-range missiles, but long-range launches in 1998, 2006, 2009 and in April of this year ended in failure. North Korea is not known to have succeeded in mounting an atomic bomb on a missile but is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen bombs, according to U.S. experts, and in 2010 revealed a uranium enrichment program that could provide a second source of material for nuclear weapons.

Six-nation negotiations on dismantling North Korea's nuclear program in exchange for aid fell apart in early 2009.

In Seoul, South Korean officials have accused North Korea of trying to influence its presidential election with what they consider provocations meant to put pressure on voters and on the United States as the North seeks concessions. Conservative Park Geun-hye, the daughter of late President Park Chung-hee, is facing liberal Moon Jae-in in the South Korean presidential vote. Polls show the candidates in a close race.

Some analysts, however, question whether North Korean scientists have corrected whatever caused the misfire of its last rocket.

"Preparing for a launch less than a year after a failure calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong," David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, wrote on the organization's website this week.

The United States has criticized North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to Asian and world security. In 2009, North Korea conducted rocket and nuclear tests within months of Obama taking office.

North Korea under its young leader has pledged to bolster its nuclear arsenal unless Washington scraps what the North calls a "hostile" policy. North Korea maintains that it is building bombs to defend itself against what it sees as a U.S. nuclear threat in the region.

This year is the centennial of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of Kim Jong Un. According to North Korean propaganda, 2012 is meant to put the North on a path toward a "strong, prosperous and great nation."

"North Korea appears to be under pressure to redeem its April launch failure before the year of the 'strong, prosperous and great nation' ends," said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Dongguk University in Seoul.

He added that a successful rocket launch would raise North Korea's bargaining power with South Korea and the United States "because it means the country is closer to developing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads."

Before its last two rocket launches, North Korea notified the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Maritime Organization about its intentions to launch. IMO spokeswoman Natasha Brown said that as of Friday the organization had not been notified by North Korea.

The North's announcement comes two days after South Korea canceled what would have been the launch of its first satellite from its own territory. Scientists in Seoul cited technical difficulties. South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the North's planned launch is "a grave provocation and a head-on challenge to the international community."

North Korea's missile and nuclear programs will be a challenge for Obama in his second term and for the incoming South Korean leader. Washington's most recent attempt to negotiate a freeze of the North's nuclear program and a test moratorium in exchange for food aid collapsed with the April launch.

The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Washington stations nearly 30,000 troops in South Korea as a buttress against any North Korean aggression. Tens of thousands more are in nearby Japan.

It is past time to incorporate mental health into our nation?s public health agenda.? Public health initiatives have increasingly focused on healthy living, diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and access to preventive health care.? Our society usually addresses mental health through media stories of irrational acts of violence carried out by disturbed, mentally-ill individuals.

In the late 1990s, it was documented for the first time that mental disorders were among the leading causes of diminished human productivity and impaired social functioning.? Mental disorders were found to contribute as much to a lifetime of disability as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and surpassed all cancers and HIV.? Five of the 10 leading causes of disability worldwide are recognized as mental health-related problems.

Insurers often discouraged treatment utilization by imposing severe limits on benefits coverage, leading to less access to mental health care.? Those seeking mental health treatment have faced higher deductibles and co-pays, limits on annual and lifetime benefits, and a lack of mental health professionals available.? It has been estimated that less than one-half of persons with diagnosable conditions are receiving the mental health treatment they need.

The recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act aims to improve access to mental health care by requiring insurers to cover mental health and addiction disorders the same as all other medical conditions.? They will also no longer be able to deny coverage of these disorders under a pre-existing condition clause, which was often used in the past to disqualify persons from receiving insurance coverage for their mental health symptoms.

Carrying out screenings for symptoms during childhood and adolescence may result in an opportunity for a mental health professional to intervene before the onset of a full-blown diagnosable mental disorder later in life.? Half of adults with diagnosable mental conditions had onsets by age 14 and three-fourths by age 24.? Significant delays in the detection of mental disorders from the age of onset when symptoms first appear are commonplace, with some disorders having delays of 8-14 years from onset to diagnosis.
