Romney faces scrutiny on aid in storm's wake

(AP) ? There's nothing like a natural disaster to test the depth of politicians' preference for small government.

And so Mitt Romney found himself on the hot seat after superstorm Sandy battered the East Coast. Only last year, as Romney hewed to the right while battling for the GOP nomination, he appeared to suggest in a debate that the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be shuttered and its responsibilities left to the states.

"Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction," Romney said at a debate last year. "And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."

Asked by moderator John King of CNN whether that would include disaster relief, Romney said: "We cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids."

Now, a week before Election Day, in the wake of a massive disaster, Romney's campaign is reassuring voters that his administration wouldn't leave disaster victims in the lurch. The public's attention is locked on the devastation caused by superstorm Sandy at a time when Romney and President Barack Obama are locked in a close presidential campaign. With Obama heavily involved in getting federal funds to those in trouble, the Romney campaign moved quickly to reassure the public it supports a strong program of storm relief.

"A Romney-Ryan administration will always ensure that disaster funding is there for those in need," said campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg. "Period."

Romney's campaign says he's not interested in getting rid of FEMA, though Romney himself ducked a spate of opportunities Tuesday to clarify his position. The campaign instead issued a statement that essentially endorsed the current disaster aid system.

"Gov. Romney believes that states should be in charge of emergency management in responding to storms and other natural disasters in their jurisdictions," Henneberg said. "As the first responders, states are in the best position to aid affected individuals and communities, and to direct resources and assistance to where they are needed most. This includes help from the federal government and FEMA."

But what the campaign wouldn't do is say whether a President Romney would insist that help for disaster victims be funded by cutting other programs in the federal budget.

Running mate Paul Ryan is squarely on the side of cutting other spending to pay for disasters. Earlier this year, he tried but failed to scrap a new system, established in the 2011 debt ceiling-deficit cuts deal, that boosts disaster spending and budgets help for victims of hurricanes, tornadoes and floods before they occur. House leaders rebuffed him, siding with Appropriations Committee members of both parties who like the new system.

What Ryan proposed is that when disaster strikes, lawmakers first scour the rest of the budget for savings to pay for rebuilding homes, roads and schools and helping small businesses.

That's easier said than done, especially since it can mean delays in getting aid out the door. Disasters like Hurricane Katrina ? and perhaps Sandy ? can prove so costly that it's simply impracticable to find cuts in other programs big enough to pay for the aid.

As has been shown time after time ? especially as tornadoes and hurricanes rip through politically conservative states ? even the sturdiest tea party supporters become fans of government when it's doling out money to storm victims for motel rooms and other temporary housing or helping with house repairs.

That role fell Tuesday to New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie, who was effusive in his praise for Obama and the federal government's initial response.

"The president has been outstanding in this and so have the folks at FEMA," Christie said on NBC's "Today."

It'll take several weeks to come up with damage cost estimates to determine whether FEMA's main disaster account will need more money.

FEMA has enough cash available to deal with immediate disaster relief, almost $8 billion, thanks to a six-month government funding bill passed in September and the new disaster financing system.

Granite Bay Short Sale Approved with ASC Mortgage Granite Bay Short Sale Approved with ASC Mortgage

Just got the good news from ASC Mortgage that this Granite Bay short sale is approved!? It took me about 2 months to negotiate the terms of this short sale.? The seller is very relieved and the buyer is super grateful to be able to turns this Granite Bay home into their own.

There are all kinds of reasons that people short sale.? Everything from job loss or reduction of hours to health reasons and transfers.? The bottom line is, LIFE HAPPENS!? The economy has made all of our homes less valuable but life doesn?t stand still in housing bust and sometimes, people need to move.? That was definitely the case with this Granite Bay short sale.

Short sales are very different from traditional sales because the bank must approve all terms in the sale.? This process is overwhelming for most real estate agents as there are often road blocks.? It?s easy for agents and sellers to become discouraged during the process.? That?s why it?s very important to use an experienced Granite Bay short sale agent if you are thinking about selling your home as a short sale.? Agents who specialize in short sales trudge on despite being told no by the banks.? They know how best to present a short sale offer, negotiate on behalf of the seller, and tweak the file to please the short sale lender.

For the best chance at short sale success, use a Granite Bay short sale agent.? See if you qualify to sell your Granite Bay home as a short sale.? Have a question?.feel free to ask?I?m here!

17th killed: Somali journalist dies of wounds

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? A radio station editor in Somalia says a journalist who was attacked by gunmen last week has died of his wounds, bringing the number of journalists killed in targeted attacks in Somalia this year to 17.

Gunmen shot Mohamed Mohamud Turyare, a reporter at Shabelle radio, last week as the 25-year-old walked home. Editor Mohamed Bashir Hashi confirmed Monday that Turyare died of his wounds Sunday.

Though Mogadishu is safer than during years of warfare from 2007-2011, journalists face more danger than ever. Analysts believe journalists are being targeted by al-Shabab militants but also by business and political leaders unhappy with journalists' coverage.

Though it is growing stronger, Mogadishu still does not have a fully functioning government. No one has been arrested for any of the 17 killings this year.

Realty Times - Family-Friendly Marketing

The tiniest members of today's families can weigh-in big when it comes to buying a house. Families must consider more than just square footage and designer decor. A family home requires room to grow and so much more.

How do you go about marketing to families? The key is to market not just the home, but also the surrounding community. When a family buys a house, they are buying a certain type of life. Here are five tips for tailoring your marketing plan to buyers with kids.

1. Nearby parks: Parents want to know the low-down on area parks and green space, especially if they're new to the area. Which parks are the cleanest? Which have tennis courts? Which are toddler-friendly? Prepare for showings by creating area park maps. If your buyers have time, take them on a quick tour of area green spaces. They may fall in love with these spots as much as their prospective neighborhood!

2. Schools: Save your clients the legwork and have information readily available about area schools. Know where district lines are drawn. Compile facts on graduation rates, average test scores, awards, and even sports programs. Extend your list past just elementary and high schools. Be sure to include stats and contact information for pre-schools, daycares, and even junior colleges and universities.

3. Sports Leagues: A savvy marketer will prepare contact information for area sports teams, adult and child. Do teams or recreation centers have websites your clients could visit on their own time? Consider creating a page full of useful links on your website where you can direct clients.

4. Crime rates: Some neighborhoods and areas have lower crime rates. Families want to know that their children will be safe walking to school and playing outside. Including low crime rate statistics with marketing information can be just enough to tip the scale in favor of a home.

5. Family Affair: Last, consider making a showing a family affair. This is especially important for families with teenagers. If you can get a teen or tween to fall in love with a house, you've just made a very vocal member of the family happy. Find out their interests and showcase areas of the home that might make good dance studios, music rooms, media rooms or craft spaces.

The idea is to have detailed research done ahead of time. Let your client see the whole picture of a home, not just how many bedrooms it has. You aren't just selling a home to mom and dad. You're selling a lifestyle that a whole family will live.

Mark Rucker on Getting Fit: 12 days going 'mostly vegetarian' and ...

?You?re going to do what? You?ll never be able to get enough protein to train as an Ironman.?
?

I?ve heard this many times over the past couple weeks as I?ve shared my newest health journey ? to go to a ?mostly vegetarian? diet ? with family and friends.
?

Over the past couple of months, I?d been considering switching my nutrition to a more vegetarian-based plan. It?s not that I don?t enjoy eating beef, chicken and other animal protein, but I?d heard a lot about the vegetarian lifestyle so I wanted to know more.
?

Two weeks ago when I was flying to Kona for the Ironman World Championship I read Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World?s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself by Rich Roll. Rich is an entertainment attorney from Los Angeles who was a competitive swimmer in college. Rich is a recovering alcoholic who on the eve of his 40th birthday decided that he wanted to change his life. His story of becoming a vegan and what he has accomplished physically (becoming an Ultraman) is truly inspiring. I?ve been following Rich for some time on Twitter and have talked back and forth with him a few times about my weight loss journey. After I finished his book, I felt inspired. So, I made the decision to start my own journey down this road.
?

Of course, when I say I?m going mostly vegetarian, people immediately want to know what that means. To me it means that I?m not going strictly vegan and that I am slowly going in that direction, much like a child enters the water for the first time. First a toe, then maybe a foot, and then maybe both feet, and so on. My philosophy on my journey over the past 19 months has always been small steps and this ?experiment? is no different.
?

Before I go any farther, though, it would probably be beneficial to share with you what I?ve learned so far about vegetarianism, which isn?t a whole lot. But it may be helpful nonetheless.
?

A vegetarian is someone who gets the majority of his or her nutrition from plant-based foods. Now when I think of a vegetarian, at least up until recently, I?ve always envisioned the ?60s-looking person with long hair, no shoes and peace symbols stitched nicely on a vest with fringes hanging off everywhere. You know, a hippie. But as I?ve learned more about the vegetarian lifestyle, I?ve realized that nothing could be farther from the truth.
?

Now there are several different ?types? of vegetarians, and this is where I think some people start to have trouble understanding vegetarianism. There are lacto vegetarians, who avoid all animal foods except for dairy. They will consume milk, cheese, yogurt and any other dairy products. There are lacto-ovo vegetarians who also add eggs and products made with eggs. This is the most common type of vegetarian in the Western world. Basically they avoid meat, poultry and fish but will eat dairy and eggs, and products containing those items.
?

There are also the ?semi-vegetarians,? also referred to as ?flexetarians,? who maintain a vegetarian lifestyle most of the time but who will occasionally consume meat, poultry or fish. More recently there has been a growth of ?pescatarians? who live the vegetarian lifestyle but will consume fish and shellfish. Finally, there is the ultimate in vegetarianism: the vegan.
?

The vegan is someone who consumes no products that contains meat, poultry, fish or shellfish, dairy or eggs. They will also avoid all products that contain any by-products from animal products. Some vegans also avoid using any products that contain any animal products such as leather, wool and the like. It is not just a nutritional way of life, but also a social statement. Not all vegans follow the philosophy to that extreme, however.
?

So far my journey has been mostly on the ?flexetarian? side of the spectrum. I?ve cut milk out of my diet and have replaced it with soy milk. I use it only for making lattes at home. I?ve cut meat out of my diet almost completely, but I did have a bowl of chili a few days ago. I?ve also cut deli meats out of my diet, but I did have a chicken breast last week.
?

I have increased the amount of whole foods I?m eating. I eat lots of fruit in the morning as well as for snacks throughout the day. I am eating salads for most lunches and have added chickpeas for protein. Dinners are the most difficult for me to go strictly vegetarian, but I am taking the small steps to get there. I am still researching options for replacing my animal proteins, and I know that I will get there.
?

Now that I?m 12 days into this experiment, I have to admit that I feel much better. As part of this process I?ve cut alcohol out of my diet as well as most processed carbs. Physically I feel better. Some of the aches and pains that I?d been experiencing are gone and I feel much more energy. I?ve even gotten back into my running and cycling routines on a more consistent schedule. Mentally I feel much clearer. I feel like I?ve emerged from a fog. It?s a strange feeling and one that is hard to explain, but I just feel like I?m mentally sharper. I?m not yet ready to say that it is all from the ?mostly vegetarian? lifestyle, but I know that is a large part of it. Time will be the true test here.
?

My ultimate goal is to go completely vegan (without the social agenda). I want to see how my body responds to clean eating and what I?m able to accomplish physically. I intend to continue training for Ironman Louisville next August. I am looking forward to this next phase of my journey and to sharing it with you.

Lesbian and Gay Relationships | Tim's Blog ? Just One Train Wreck ...

I have gay relationships. I have lesbian relationships too. I think God is pleased.

There seem to be quite a few people in my profession who fall into one of the LGBTQQ categories ? lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning. In fact, our professional association created an LGBT Section a few years ago, much like we have sections for people with other common identifiers (such as ethnicity). The opening reception for the LGBT Section was at one of the association?s midyear conferences a while back, and I was there with a friend of mine who organized the formation of this new group. He even declared me an auxiliary member, since I was hanging out with him as he greeted the other members. Not that auxiliary membership actually exists, but if it did I?d be a shoe-in.

Why was I there? Because, like I said,?he?s a friend of mine.

He is one of the people I am closest to, not too far behind my wife in that regard. We call each other up when things are on our minds and we need to talk. In fact, he called last night and my wife and I put him on speaker phone so we could all chat as we made dinner. He?d heard that our daughter?s car got totaled and since she lives 10 minutes from him but 8 hours from us, he?offered to loan her his car. He and I borrow sweatshirts from each other when it?s cold. He and his husband have dinner with me and my family. Getting together is rarer than we?d like, since?we live at opposite ends of the state, but when we do see each other it commences with a hug. Go ahead and call it an intimate friendship. I do.

I also spend time with other gay and lesbian colleagues from up and down the state. We serve on committees together, make dinner reservations if we?re at the?same conferences, and support one another. One of them is even a person I turn to for prayer support at times, as she does me.

As I said, I have lesbian and gay relationships and I think God is pleased.

You see, Jesus spent time with people who were on the margins ? the woman at the well in John 4, Zacchaeus the?tax collector in Luke 19, the woman caught in adultery in John 8,??the woman who used her own hair to wipe her tears from Jesus? feet in Luke 7, to name a few?- and?he wasn? concerned with how it looked to the upright religious leaders around him.

Why do I identify with my lesbian and gay friends? Because I think Jesus would have.

My friends know my faith. It comes up in conversation often. Jesus talked to his friends and acquaintances about God;?so do I. In fact, as odd as it may seem, I actually find it easier to do so with these particular friends than with others sometimes.

And let?s face this fact too. Even though my colleagues have reached the pinnacle of their profession, they can still be marginalized at a moment?s notice. Each and every one of them is always a hair?s breadth away from?unfair discrimination and downright bullying. Make no mistake about it, it is still dangerous to be homosexual in America.

These are my friends. I like them and find them a pleasure. I think they feel the same about me.

I also love them. I think Jesus does too.

Jesus said to them, ?It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.? (Mark 2:17.)

[Jesus also said,] ?The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.? (Luke 19:10.)

My friends aren?t so different from me. They need Jesus. So do I.

Bouncy-ball cameras scout out dangerous situations

A CLUMP of cameras, electronics and LEDs packed into a rubber shell the size of a tennis ball could help firefighters or SWAT teams scout out the potentially dangerous environments they are about to enter.

Designed by Boston-based startup Bounce Imaging, the device contains six cameras. When the ball is thrown into an unknown area, the cameras take two photographs per second and send them to a smartphone or laptop, where software knits the images into a 360-degree view of the room. The cameras capture light in the near-infrared range, and the device comes equipped with infrared LEDs, allowing it to build a full panorama of a scene even if it is poorly lit.

Bounce founder Francisco Aguilar says the idea for the device came to him after the Haiti earthquake in 2010. He saw the need for a reconnaissance device that would be useful in environments like the damaged buildings of Port-au-Prince.

Bernard Hicks, a SWAT-team officer in a major US city, speaking in an unofficial capacity, says that the Bounce device is attractive because it's easy to use. And at a few hundred dollars, it's much cheaper than the existing technologies used to image the inside of unknown areas. This means officers won't have to worry about breaking the equipment.

Hicks says there's a growing trend for police officers to be asked to take on active shooters rather than wait for the SWAT team to arrive, and that Bounce can help them handle that situation. "Incidents with active shooters are so volatile," he explains. "Whether it's one officer or two officers on scene, this technology gives them the opportunity to know the dangers around the corner before they get to them."

Aguilar suggests that a future version of the device might have a Geiger counter to get initial readings on suspected radioactive areas.

The device is still a prototype, but Aguilar says the finished product will be tested by SWAT teams and Massachusetts police departments in January.

Reports: UK rocker arrested as part of Savile case

LONDON (AP) ? Police investigating child sex abuse allegations against the late BBC television host Jimmy Savile arrested former glam rock star and convicted sex offender Gary Glitter on Sunday, British media reported, raising further questions about whether Savile was at the center of a broader pedophile ring.

Police would not directly identify the suspect arrested Sunday, but media including the BBC and Press Association reported he was the 68-year-old Glitter.

The musician, whose real name is Paul Gadd, made it big with the crowd-pleasing hit "Rock & Roll (Part 2)," a mostly instrumental anthem that has been a staple at American sporting events, thanks to its catchy "hey" chorus. But he fell into disgrace after being convicted on child abuse charges in Vietnam.

Sunday's arrest was the first in a widening scandal over Savile's alleged sex crimes, which started garnering attention earlier this month when a television documentary showed several women claiming that Savile abused them when they were teenagers. Hundreds of potential victims have since come forward to report similar claims to police against Savile, a much-loved children's TV presenter and disc jockey who died at the age of 84 last year.

Most have alleged abuse by Savile, but some said they were abused by Savile and others. Most claimed they were assaulted in their early teens.

The scandal has raised questions about whether the BBC, the publicly funded and trusted broadcaster, had ignored crimes it suspected over several decades. Its executives have apologized and vowed to uncover the true scale of the alleged abuse.

"The BBC's reputation is on the line," Chris Patten, the chairman of the BBC Trust, wrote in The Mail on Sunday newspaper. "The BBC risks squandering public trust because one of its stars over three decades was apparently a sexual criminal ... and because others ? BBC employees and hangers-on ? may also have been involved."

On Sunday, the BBC and Sky News showed footage of Glitter, who wore a hat, a dark coat and sunglasses, being taken from his home by officers and driven away.

Police would not directly identify the suspect, but when asked about Glitter a spokesman said the force arrested a man in his 60s early Sunday morning in London on suspicion of sexual offenses in connection with the Savile probe. He was released later Sunday and was due to return to a London police station in December for further questioning, police said. British police do not generally identify suspects under arrest by name until they are charged.

Glitter, known for his shiny jumpsuits and bouffant wigs, was jailed in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography, and convicted in 2006 in Vietnam of committing "obscene acts with children" ? offenses involving girls aged 10 and 11. He was deported back to Britain in 2008.

In 2006, the NFL advised its football teams not to use the Glitter version of "Rock and Roll (Part 2)" at games.

One witness recently told a BBC-TV show that she once saw Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's dressing room at the broadcaster's TV center in the 1970s. Glitter has denied the allegations.

Police have said that though the majority of cases it is investigating relate to Savile alone, some involve the entertainer and other unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

The scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, the longtime host of the popular BBC shows "Top of the Pops" and "Jim will Fix It," allegedly cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises. Police describe him as one of the worst sex offenders in recent history.

The BBC has set up an independent inquiry into the corporation's culture and practices in the years Savile worked there. It also launched a separate inquiry into why its managers shelved an investigation into the allegations.

But the scandal continues to put the broadcaster under pressure, and it seems likely that more people ? either outside or inside the corporation ? could be implicated.

"It could be the beginning of other high-profile arrests," Roy Greenslade, a journalism professor at London's City University, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday.

Max Clifford, a prominent public relations guru, claimed that dozens of celebrities from the 1960s and 1970s have approached him to express fear that they could be drawn into to the scandal and criticized for their hedonistic behavior in the past.

Greenslade said that while Glitter's arrest must be a huge concern to the BBC, it is too early to say that the broadcaster's reputation is in crisis.

"If any BBC employee is shown to be involved, then there would be a nosedive in public trust," he said. "But nothing at the moment has been proven."

Pope, ending synod, urges lapsed Catholics to return to fold

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, closing a gathering of bishops who discussed how to win back lapsed and lukewarm Catholics, on Sunday said the Church had to develop new ways of reaching out to those who had drifted from the faith.

Benedict, 85, said a solemn Mass in St Peter's Basilica to close the three-week synod of some 260 bishops from around the world on the theme of the "New Evangelisation," or how to stem the haemorrhaging of the faithful.

The Church is suffering desertions from its practising flock in former strongholds in Europe, North America and Latin America due to sex abuse scandals, increasing secularism, rival faiths and open dissent against Church teachings on homosexuality and its ban on a female priesthood.

"Besides traditional and perennially valid pastoral methods, the Church seeks to adopt new ones, developing a new language, attuned to the different world cultures ...," he said.

He did not name any new methods but recently the 1.2 billion member Church has increasingly turned to the Internet and social media to spread its message.

One of the 58 proposals made by the bishops at the end of the gathering called for Catholic leaders to be better trained in the use of electronic communications.

In his homily, the pope said Church leaders had to work harder to turn around a situation "where the light of faith has grown dim and people have drifted away from God, no longer considering him relevant for their lives".

The synod's final message, issued on Friday, said the Roman Catholic faith in many advanced countries risked being "eclipsed" by an increasingly secularized and materialistic world.

The message, a synthesis of the topics discussed, said that while the gospel could not be "a product to be placed in the market of religions", the Church needed to find new ways of putting it "into practice in today's circumstances".

Friday's message took a dig at the United States and Canada, saying the countries of North America needed to "recognize the many expressions of the present culture in the countries of your world which are today far from the Gospel".

The pope will use the deliberations at the synod and the proposals to write his own document, known as a "apostolic exhortation" on the topic.

A black widow's Tango Mortale in gamma-ray light

Friday, October 26, 2012

Pulsars are the compact remnants from explosions of massive stars. Some of them spin around their own axis hundreds of times per second, emitting beams of radiation into space. Until now, they could only be found through their pulsed radio emissions. Now, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) in Hanover assisted by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy have discovered a millisecond pulsar solely via its pulsed gamma radiation. A new data analysis method developed by the AEI was crucial for the success. The pulsar is accompanied by an unusual sub-stellar partner, which it is vaporizing, hence the name "black widow".

Back in 1994, astronomers discovered a source of strong gamma-rays in the constel-lation of Centaurus. They suspected that a pulsar was the origin of the energetic radiation. Now, a team of scientists led by Holger Pletsch from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI) has solved the mystery and identified the culprit: the millisecond gamma-ray pulsar PSR J1311-3430. The developement of a new data analysis method by the AEI scientists enabled the discovery, since rapidly spinning pulsars are extremely difficult to find.

To unambiguously identify a gamma-ray pulsar, astronomers must know its properties to very high precision. This includes its position, spin frequency, and how the latter changes over time. If the pulsar is in a binary system, the analysis problem is even more complicated: at least three additional orbital parameters have to be determined as well.

In the case of PSR J1311-3430 astronomers had already observed the companion, which is heated by the radiation from the pulsar, with optical telescopes. They were thus able to partially constrain the orbital parameters and confine the position of the pulsar.

"We developed a particularly efficient method to search the data from NASA's Fermi satellite for gamma-ray millisecond pulsars, including those in binary systems. Only this method enabled us to probe the wide parameter ranges," says Holger Pletsch, lead author of the article published in Science. The new analysis method enables scientists to conduct a 'blind search' for gamma-ray millisecond pulsars for the first time ? right up to very high spinning frequencies.

The scientists analysed the Fermi data on the Atlas computer cluster at the AEI. "Our search used data collected by the gamma-ray satellite over a total of four years. Very soon after we started running the analysis, a clear signal showed up in the results. What we saw was very exciting," says Pletsch.

PSR J1311-3430 spins 390 times per second, emitting gamma-ray photons into space in the form of a beam, similar to a lighthouse. In roughly one in a million revo-lutions of the pulsar, a single photon reaches the detector on board Fermi.

The gamma-ray signal also reveals much about the companion to the astronomers: the orbital motion of the binary system modulates the photon arrival times, yielding information about the partner star. "The companion object is small and unusually dense," says AEI Director Bruce Allen. "It is at least eight times as massive as the planet Jupiter, but has at most 60 percent the planet's radius."

From this information, the researchers calculated the density of the companion, which turned out to be unusually high; it is around 30 times as dense as the Sun. Presumably, the small companion is the compact remnant of a star which has been orbiting the pulsar since earlier times. Over time, the pulsar accreted matter from the star, thereby accelerating its rotation. Pulsar and companion moved closer and closer together.

"At present, the remaining stellar core, which presumably consists mainly of helium, is heated by the radiation from the pulsar and literally evaporated," says Holger Pletsch. Astronomers call this type of pulsar a 'black widow', in analogy with a spe-cies of spider which kills the smaller male after mating. In the distant future, PSR J1311-4330 might possibly completely vaporize its companion and from then on trav-el through space alone.

And that's not all: "Our discovery is not only a first, it also sets several new records," explains Bruce Allen. Currently, the odd couple is orbiting its common centre of mass on an almost perfect circular trajectory in only 93 minutes. This is the shortest known orbital period of all pulsars in binary systems.

At a distance of only 1.4 Earth-Moon separations, the binary system is the closest one known to date with a pulsar. The pulsar is speeding along its circular orbit with at least 13,000 kilometres per hour. Its light-weight companion is even faster, at up to 2.8 million kilometres per hour.

Holger Pletsch and his colleagues also had a close look at older observations with the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia, but were unable to find the fast pulsar here. "Apparently, the cloud of vaporized material from the companion absorbs most of the radio wave emissions from the pulsar and possibly makes it invisible to radio telescopes," says Lucas Guillemot from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, co-author of the publication. The scientists are already planning further observations at higher radio frequencies. They hope to use them to accurately determine the object's distance from Earth, for example.

Systems like this provide astronomers with new insights into the evolution of very close binary systems, which are as yet still incompletely understood. PSR J1311-3430 could also shed new light on the generation of the gamma-ray photons and radio emissions in the strong magnetic field of pulsars. The pulsar may just be the tip of the iceberg: many other unidentified gamma-ray sources may harbour similarly unusual systems. Thirty years after the discovery of the first millisecond pulsar in the radio range, the novel analysis method of the Max Planck researchers at the AEI has opened a new door to the easier identification of these elusive celestial objects.
